Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University was carved out of Punjab Agriculutre University. On 2nd June, 2006 it was formally declared open by the then Chief Minister of Punjab, Capt Amarinder Singh. The motive of the establishing a seprate university was to speeden up the research activity in the field of dairying, animal husbandry, and other veterinary acitivties. It is to be noted that milk and milk products contibute 16% of the GDP of Punjab. So it was of utmost importance to carve a seprate university for the same. The university will go a long way in raising the rural household economy as main stream agriculture is stagnant from the last decade. It is even more important as avearage land holding in punjab has decreased to less than 2 acres, in which a household cant make its two end meet, but in the same 2 acres one can run a profitable bussiness of dairy farming.

bharat nagar chowk is heavily congested at most times. on one corner is manjit ice cream parlour. There used to be an old sherman tank that India had captured from pakistan in a previous war along with a statue of a celebrated soldier. However that has been removed to expedite traffic.
